RvK's First Industrial Gas Drilling Reporter
June 23, 2009, Riverkeeper has published its first in a series of Industrial Gas Drilling Reporters. The Reporters are designed to update the public on the issues associated with industrial gas drilling in New York and to help concerned citizens make informed decisions during the public participation component of New York’s upcoming draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Study.
While gas drilling in New York is not new, the magnitude, scope, and location of the currently proposed drilling is. Industrial gas drilling throughout the Marcellus Shale and other shale reserves in New York has the potential to dramatically impact the environment, local communities and the drinking water supply of 9 million New Yorkers.

Victory in Indian Point Campaign
On June 22, 2009, The Supreme Court of the State of New York ruled in favor of Riverkeeper and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in dismissing Entergy's petition to overturn a decision by the DEC. That decision, released on August 15, 2008, determined that Indian Point’s cooling water intake system causes adverse environmental impacts on Hudson River fish.
The DEC will now move to require closed-cycle cooling, which would reduce water usage and fish kills by 95 percent or more. Hearings on the new draft permit for the plant, which will now mandate closed-cycle cooling, are tentatively scheduled for 2010.

Submit Your Comments for Gowanus Superfund Designation
The Gowanus Canal, one of the most heavily contaminated water bodies in the nation, is a candidate for the Federal Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). If it makes the list, then the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can begin studying the extent of its contamination and draft plans for a thorough and coordinated cleanup.
July 8th is the deadline for submitting comments on nominating the Gowanus Canal for Superfund designation. Riverkeeper urges you to ask your elected officials to support Superfund designation for the Gowanus Canal. Visit our site for sample comments and delivery instructions.

Hudson Valley Leaders Set Goals for Region
In a joint press conference held at the river's edge in Poughkeepsie on June 10, the leaders of Riverkeeper, Scenic Hudson and Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, declared their shared vision for the future of the Hudson Valley. Their goals focus on continuing to improve water quality in the Hudson, protecting 65,000 acres of the most important land along the river and training the next generation of environmental leaders.
Riverkeeper, Scenic Hudson and Clearwater have a 40-year history of successful collaboration on behalf of the citizens of New York. They coordinate to protect our region's natural resources and to develop smart, sustainable plans for a green future in the Hudson Valley.

RvK Receives Major Grant for Water Quality Testing Program
With generous renewed funding from The Wallace Research Foundation, Riverkeeper and our academic partners Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and Queens College of the City University of New York will be able to continue our unprecedented joint study of water quality in the Hudson River for another two years.
In 2008-09, with initial funding from The Wallace Research Foundation, Riverkeeper joined with scientists to launch the most comprehensive water quality monitoring program to date on the Hudson River Estuary. The goals of this program are to better understand the factors controlling the health of the Hudson River, provide a scientific foundation to inform ecosystem management decisions, and engage the public in campaigns to improve Hudson River water and habitat quality.

Accord Speedway: RvK Will Sue to Halt Polluting
On May 19, Riverkeeper served the Accord Speedway with a Notice of Intent to Sue for violating the federal Clean Water Act and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) by polluting a nearby stream and connected wetlands with turbid water. Riverkeeper believes the water contains pesticides, anti-freeze, oil, grease and other petroleum products.
Riverkeeper says the Ulster County racetrack has been illegally dumping a noxious blend of pollutants directly into the North Peter's Kill, a pristine trout stream and tributary of Rondout Creek, and is also operating an open dump in violation of RCRA's ban on open dumping.
