Delaware Aqueduct Leaks Continue
Two leaks in the 85-mile long Delaware Aqueduct are costing New Yorkers up to 36 million gallons of drinking water every day, while flooding the basements and backyards of nearby homes in the towns of Wawarsing and Roseton.
The leaks are also believed to be the cause of a 10-foot-deep sinkhole, less than a quarter-mile from the Danskammer power plant. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has known about the leaks since 1988. With almost twice the amount of water leaking today as in 1992, Riverkeeper is calling on the DEP to make repairing these leaks a top priority.

Stricter Phosphorus Standards Needed
Riverkeeper supports the NY State Assembly Bill 8914 which calls for reducing the use of products that contain phosphorus in New York State. Phosphorus, which is currently found in some lawn fertilizers and household cleaning products, is a hazardous chemical when it makes its way into our waterways through lawn run-off and dumping into our sewers.
