Riverkeeper has released the third volume of its Industrial Gas Drilling Reporter.  The Reporters are designed to raise public awareness about industrial gas drilling in New York State.  Volume III compiles many stories from across the country, provides updates on legislation and the SEQRA process, and includes a new “Take Action” section to help concerned citizens get involved.

GE DredgingThe Latest on GE Dredging

The long-awaited dredging of PCBs from the Hudson River is now in its fourth month, with approximately 127,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment removed by August 14. This represents approximately one-half the total amount of contaminated sediment targeted for removal in Phase 1 of this two-phase remediation. In response to elevated levels of PCBs due to resuspension in the water, EPA acted cautiously and either slowed the dredging or, in one instance, briefly halted the work so it could evaluate protocols and add additional protective measures. Riverkeeper’s goal is a safe and complete clean-up, in accordance with the 2002 Record of Decision and the Federal Superfund law. Although delays in the dredging schedule are not optimal, they are trivial when compared to the decades it has taken for this project to begin, and the 500 pounds of PCBs that would flow downriver every year if no dredging occured at all.

Gowanus CanalRiverkeeper Partners with Law Enforcement for Gowanus Patrols

This summer, Riverkeeper has greatly increased its patrols of Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal, one of the country’s most heavily polluted waterways.  In addition to performing water quality monitoring from our boat, the R. Ian Fletcher, Riverkeeper has investigated numerous sites on the Canal with representatives from the Kings County District Attorney's office, the NYC DSBS Dockmaster Unit and the Department of Environmental Conservation. This collaboration extends to Newtown Creek, another highly polluted urban waterway dividing Brooklyn and Queens, where Riverkeeper has conducted frequent patrols for many years.

Membership Makes the Movement!

Your membership gift empowers Riverkeeper to be the best at what we do: taking the fight for the Hudson River and New York City's drinking water right to those who continue to harm our environment.

We're counting on you to join our membership campaign! Not only will our board of directors match your personal gift, but it will energize our campaign. Your gift will also energize our campaign by bringing others to the movement.

This campaign is crucial to Riverkeeper’s continued growth and to building a diverse base of support to sustain us. Here are some highlights from our latest membership launch:

  1. To motivate new and increased membership giving, members of our board of directors have raised $50,000 to match membership gifts.
  2. New membership benefits - we've listened to what you'd enjoy most and have modified our premiums - including complimentary tickets to Shadfest at the Atlantic Sturgeon membership level.
  3. Give or Get credit - we will determine your annual membership level according to the amount of your personal giving PLUS all other membership gifts you are responsible for bringing to Riverkeeper.
